I recently sold my Merlin TSM-MXr speakers. For the time that I owned them many a audiophile came by to hear them and they never failed to simply stun an educated ear. I considered them musical instruments more than speakers. Bobby offered to upgrade them with the new wiring, but he was also very honest about the differences. In no way did he even HINT that I'd be losing anything by not upgrading. In fact he said I might even prefer the version I had, given the electronics was using at the time. A class act.
I opted to stick with what I had because I was planning on VSMs.
Now, as for the upgrades, I have no idea what the issue is. Quite a few speaker companies tweak their products over time, from my old classic Royd Coniston R to Carver Ribbons and even my Magnepans. Bobby doesn't sell 12 different models of speakers. He basically makes two and they are his life's work and it constitutes an art. This is a somewhat unique business model and it produces a unique product.
If you're the type of person who can't enjoy a fine car just because the new one has LED tail-lights, then audio is a bad hobby for you (unless you have unlimited funds). Bobby's various upgrades over the years are not in the least required to enjoy his speakers. Get them if you want to push the envelope without buying a whole new speaker system or just enjoy a great speakers. How can you lose? I might have kept the TSMs forever, but location of the speakers changed and the VSMs are a better fit.
It's unlikely that most of the negative comments come from people who are experienced with the Merlin speakers. The respect for these speakers is overwhelmingly positive, to an extent that there is a type of backlash that seems to garner irritation from some audiophiles. I'm looking forward to a pair of the new VSM-MXM and I do hope more people get to hear them.
