RE: Low volume speaker recommendations?

Hornlover is right that it's more an effect of the human ear than it is an effect from the loudspeaker. So to an extent there's nothing you can do about it.

That said, I have personally found that woofers built to tighter tolerances and with more compliant suspensions can retain that full sound better at low volumes. An example was a speaker I built with the AudioTech C-Quenze woofer vs one with the ScanSpeak Illuminator. Both are top quality woofers, but the AudioTech is hand made and has a tighter gap than the Scan ... the AT also has more compliant suspension. Other than the woofer and of course crossover network, the two speakers were idential. The difference wasn't huge, but the AT based speaker did sound fuller at low volumes.
