RE: can one speaker do it all? looking to upgrade (long)

I'm in the camp that recommends adding a sub, particularly with the type of music you listen to. My experience (first with B&W805 bookshelf speakers, now with Paradigm Reference floorstanders) is that a sub, once dialed in correctly can take your sound places no speaker I have ever owned can.

The caveats: the sub should be powered (its own amp), contain its own EQ and it should have room correction capability. Once those basics are met, then its a matter of fine-tuning, especially your crossover freq. I like a deep, deep bass and not necessarily boomy, so in my case, I have to be careful to not have the gap between the low of my mains and the freq the sub takes over at. I hope I was clear enough in that last sentence.

So, in short, IMO, the Harbeths are excellent speakers, they just might need a little bite or help in the low end.
