Yes, one sub. Actually, I have two but one is powered and the other is a slave, so they operate in mono like one subwoofer. I can't imagine how stereo subs could be better because my sub is located behind me and it sounds like all the bass comes from my satellites in front of me. If I can't even tell where the sub is located, how could stereo subs be better. However, I've never had stereo subs and I don't intend to expend the funds to try them.
My subs have a low pass filter that is currently set at 55-Hz, so they reproduce only the bottom octave from about 30-Hz to 60-Hz. I had one in the rear corner of the room and the other on the rear wall, but I found they sounded better when placed together against the rear wall so they acted as one subwoofer.
