General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Do various speaker cables sound different, or just various expensive ones?

I can tell you that within the confines of my system over the years, the answer is a resounding yes regarding varying sound from varying cables. On the fairly inexpensive side, the Analysis Plus Oval 9's were much more open and with better highs than the cables they replaced. The Cardas Neutral Reference did not have as solid a bass as the PC Audio Xstream Statement cables, but were more open and "neutral." Finally, my current cables (Audience AU24) absolutely killed the PS Audio cables in every aspect except the bass and left the Cardas sounding clinical and a bit raspy in comparison. Also, I hear a definite improvement between my Audience AU24 and AU24e interconnects (the "e" versions are more open, clearer, with a bit better resolution). Regarding the gauge of the cables, the PS Audio cables were about an inch wide, very heavy and even broke free from one of my amp's terminals causing the need to re-terminate the cable. The much better sounding AU24 is only 1/8" in diameter, very lightweight, and much easier to handle. Not saying that the AU24 will sound best in YOUR system, just that I've heard definite differences between cables and that the gauge isn't necessarily an indication of quality.
