Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Testing facilities

I am not sure I know what you're after but many speaker makers have drivers made for them - many make their own.

Neither is better or worse since it depends on what sound you're after.

Take my speaker - the drivers are designed by the likes of SEAS who have their own Anechoic chamber to test their drivers.

The fellow that designed my speaker's cabinet - was L.L. Beranek - he invented the Anechoic Chamber.

Bose has an Anechoic chamber. Others rent out Anechoic chambers for their design - then they really don't need to use it again.

There are pros and cons of using making your own drivers - the pro is that if the driver ever blows the customer will have to go to you and you can charge them any amount you want - the driver is $3 you charge them $800 because in 7 years you've changed the models twice and so you can tell the person - "sorry we don't make those any more you should buy a new model or pay the absurd replacement fee."

The advantage for the customer owning a speaker with more common drivers is they can get replacements - the disadvantage for the manufacturer is that if the driver maker goes under or they're in Thailand with a flood - they're stuck without a supply of woofers.

I see no correlation of sound quality between speakers that make their own drivers to those who do not - and big companies to smaller companies or those that have anechoic chambers or not.

However, like Bose and Monster cables - I see a lot of companies that like to copy their very successful marketing strategy of selling science and technology. Perhaps because they have more trouble selling the sound. The evidence occurs when the play button is pushed or the needle hits the vinyl.
