RE: Dahlquist DQ-20i

FWIW, when I purchased my DQ20's, the previous owner powered them with a 150 wpc Carver Receiver, which is what I auditioned them with. They sounded very good and I bought them then and there. I paid more than $30, so you got a very good deal, provided they have not been altered (i.e. replaced drivers).

When I got them home, I hooked them up to my 75wpc home theater receiver (Denon) and they sounded really, really bad, so I then hooked them up to my old, drug out of storage Carver M500t (250wpc). Wow, what a difference that made. As a result, I have resurrected my 2-channel system, and use DQ-M9C's with my (now upgraded to Pioneer 100wpc HT receiver) home theater system.

In my opinion, 150wpc is the bare minimum that DQ20's (or DQ20i's) should be fed; not to play loud, but to play accurately, with the full range of sound (and sound field) that they're capable of reproducing. Anything much less and the lack of bass will truly detract from the reproduction of music, not to mention that the sound field will fall apart.

HTH, and good luck with them.

PS Check the surrounds on the woofers, as they are prone to deterioration, but can be repaired rather easily and inexpensively, either with a kit or by having a reputable speaker tech rebuild them.
