Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

a bigger amplifier

is a safer bet for speaker safety. the square wave reference below is right on. those speakers you have are of low sensitivity and traditionally need more power to play loudly safely.

i have spendor s3/5s with 84db sensitivity and the 200wpc i run is a necessary evil. turns out, not so evil. they also did nicely with 400wpc of aragon monoblock power. sure, if i played skinny puppy stupid loud for any length of time, they would be toast. thats a lot of continuous power giving the voice coils little relief.

more normal music with peaks AND valleys of power would be a safer bet. its amazing how loud they will play.

a small receiver like you have is asking for trouble tying to play music loudly. thats what your speaker manufacturer was getting at.
