I agree with the voice coil diagnosis.

Check by gently pushing in the woofer cone. A scraping sound indicates a nicked voice coil. Or possibly the spider and voice coil assembly have become disconnected. If you feel adventurous, pull the woofer and take a look. For now, at least you can listen to the fartfart sound!
