I have a 19' * 20' room - a detached garege turned listening room. Setting the speakers up in the traditional manner resulted in this overpowering one note boominess that colored the mids and highs. Didn't matter what kind of music was being played either. Set up on the diagonal, this problem goes away. Must be something in how the speakers see the room. Don't know anything about room acoustics, but know this diagonal setup has been a lifesaver for me.This has me thinking small monitors with a sub may be good for square rooms as you could position the sub diagonally and set the monitors up more traditionally, if you wanted to maintain a traditional arranged room.
Perhaps some room treatments may have corrected the problem while letting me have a more normal room, but the whole room looks fine to me, I don't have anyone else who has a say in what I do, and the diagonal is free.
