Re: Which midrange to use with Raven 2.0 ribbons ?

I was contemplating similar project with Raven R1. Acarian Systems Alon Exotica uses 5" SEAS magnesium(W14CY001?) midrange crossed over at 3.5K to RAVEN R1. A SEAS 7" magnesium (W17E002?) was used for the bass. Exotica got a 3 star, HP editor's choices rating from The Absolute Sound, Aug/Sept 2000. SEAS magnesium drivers are all low in efficiency(85~88 dB), very transparent, detailed, low THD and IM but always needed the LCR conjugate to tame out the break up peaks at high frequencies, although their rise time response and decay is not so fast as the best doped paper or kevlar. These are found in the Audio Physic Avanti Century, Jamo Concerto 8, 11 and Tyler Acoustics and many other newer European speakers. Personally I would prefer a fast driver(Jordan JX53?)for the midrange with fast rise time, fast decay to match the ribbons. Zalytron has quite a few kit projects with Raven R1 and R2 mated to SEAS, Cabasse, PHL and Triangle drivers. The Aria 5R was designed by Joe D'appolito and uses two Focal 5.25" kevlar drivers in a MTM configuration and was reviewed favorably in a 1998 Speaker Builder issue, Joe D'appolito has since changed the cross over to 6th order high pass to protect the Raven driver and also cut down unwanted IM distortion. The Ravens are very narrow on vertical dispersion(longer the ribbon the worse it gets) and need to be positioned at ear level, although horizontal dispersion is excellent. If budget allows electronic cross over/bi-amp would be the way to go. Email me if you have other questions.
