Re: Need help for Denon+B&W speaker system

Hey There,

First off, I'd make every effort to find room for a Denon AVR3801 or 4800 in your budget. The "upper end" Denon receivers are excellent sounding products and very much better than the rest of their line.

Speakers...sticking with B&W I would go for 602's front, the CC6 center, and 601's behind. Subwoofers...I'm honestly not a big fan of B&W's less expensive subs...what other brands does the shop carry? B&W makes some dipole surrounds called the DS6...I don't like those one bit...if you want B&W in the back, stick with direct radiators like the 601.

Here's how my math works out:
601 $450/pr
602 $600/pr
CC6 $350/ea
AVR3801 $1200/ea
Stands for front 601 ~$100/pr
Cabling for system ~$100

Total [at full retail] $2800, leaving you with plenty of dough in the budget for a DVD player and a nice sub. Don't underestimate the value of a good DVD player...they make a difference. I would budget a minimum of $500 for a nice DVD player, and at least that much again for a sub. Moving up to the Denon 4800 would add $600 [retail] to the cost of the system. The 4800 is definatly better than the 3801, but it could send you over budget or cause you to underspend on the sub and DVD.

The seating in the room sounds like trouble, but [as you state] there's nothing that can be easily done, so I wouldn't worry too much. Because of the unusual layout of the room, it might make more sense to use a dipole rear speaker as they are less sensitive to placement issues. As I said earlier, I'd stay away from the B&W dipoles, but you may want to investigate another brand of dipole for the rear, while keeping the B&W's up front.

:-)
Steve
