1) I have noticed that the horn of the 2251 is not in wood. Do you think it is a problem? At more than $10000 a pair of 2251, it should be of the highest (well... or nearly so) quality.

Like I said, I've never heard the 2251, however I KNOW when you load a TAD compression driver in a round wooden tractrix horn you get excellent results. If you look at the more expensive models at the TAD site you will notice they use a very high quality wooden horn. The wooden horn models also use larger woofers and 4" drivers.

2) You speak of a SET amp... Why not. But the efficiency is not very high (93db) and the power handling huge (500W). Don't you think a refined and powerful SS amp could be a good matching?

That's because the 2251 is padded way down to mate with the woofer and to get a flat response. I drive my TAD compression drivers direct with the exception of a eq/notch filter. It's a copy of the one used in the top of the line TAD studio monitor. It not only flattens the response but it also flattens the impedence of the horn loaded driver so the SET amp can drive it better. With the EQ, in the horn, I'm getting closer to 118 db one watt, one meter!! So I biamp with Wright Sound 2a3 amps.

The 15" woofers are more like 95-98 db 1w/m so they are pretty SET friendly. They use ultra high energy alnico magnets. There is a company called Classic Audio Reproductions that sells the 1602 woofer, 4001 compression driver and wooden horn, plus the TAD tweeter built for like $12000.00, I've heard reports of great results driving them with 2 watt amps. The 1201 12" midbass driver is AWESOME in a front loaded bass horn. Mine are around 108 db with one watt. I drive my 1201's with ET 300B amps. Bruce Edgar uses the 1201 woofer in his Titans.

IME driving the compression drivers with solid state is just OK. The SET's sound much more musical and alive.

Mike
