Re: Speaker stands??

Can't help you with the physics of stands, although I can tell you about my experience.

All the below took place on a suspended wood floor.

I started out with some inexpensive wood MDF speaker stands that, as you say, kept the speakers off the floor. The speakers sounded terrible. It was my impression that the MDF stands were actually singing along with the speakers, but adding all sorts of distortion in the process.

I moved to stacking various sizes of concrete blocks with a blu-tak like substance (from the local hardware) between the blocks to keep them from rocking against oneanother and a blu-tak like substance between the concrete blocks and the speakers. There was a clear and noticeable improvement in the sound. I found the sound quite acceptable, but the concrete blocks had a very low wife acceptance factor.

I next moved to floor spiked welded steel stands with a blu-tak like substance attaching the speakers to the stands. The unfilled stands had a noticable amount of ringing. I then filled each of the stands with about 75 pounds of lead shot. This stopped the ringing and solidified the sound. Additionally, as a strategy to keep the vacuum cleaner from damaging the base of the stands I placed the stands (with their spikes) on top of 1 1/4 x 11 x 13 inch granite slabs. I was quite amazed to find that the granite slabs cleaned up the sound even more and gave even greater focus to the sound.

So that's what happened. Perhaps others can explain the phisics behind it.
