Reynaud Magic Stand with built-in Hemholtz resonators

209.162.48.247

Most speaker stands available today are heavy, mass-loaded stands. The design of the Jean Marie Reynaud Magic Stand is a different paradigm than the mass-loaded metal stands. It is made of medite, a high-density particle board made in Medford, Oregon, and is designed to couple to the speakers with speaker putty, has two built-in Hemholtz resonators which reduce the standing waves between the speaker driver and the floor, and between the speaker port and the floor, are tuned to two different frequencies between 100-400HZ.

The result is to reduce excessive bass "humps" in the frequency response. B&K measurements with mass loaded metal stands and the Magic Stands show that the frequency response with the metal stands extends in an 8dB range. With the Magic Stands it falls to a 4 dB range. The -6dB downpoint of 50 Hz with the metal stand was down only -3 dB with the Magic Stand.

An additional benefit is that as a result of the flattened bass response, the midrange opens up, isn't covered up by the bass coloration caused by the standing waves.

Technical information on the Magic Stand is availble at http://www.jm-reynaud.com/magic_e.shtml.

Non-metal, non-mass loaded stands are available from other loudspeaker manufacturers, including Diapason and Sonus Faber, and others, which are designed to work with some of their speaker models, so heavy mass loaded stands are not the only choice. I'm sure you can obtain stands on a home-trial basis to see if they work well with your speakers before buying.
