Passive subs might be ok if they were from the same company as your main speakers. Most of the passive subwoofers I've seen work from a fixed crossover point and I don't believe they have a phase control, which is important to properly intergrate the sub with the main speakers. I think you would prefer the flexablity of a powered subwoofer.
