passive true subs why not?

I am imagining, given how affordable (~$1000) a powered sub is, there surely must be even more affordable passive subs out there. My amp delivers plenty of power to power a sub, and I just need the bottom octave or so (my speakers already go down to around 35hz or so perfectly fine), so I am wondering about a nice passive sub-woofer.
Any thoughts?
