RE: Separate Sub Vs. Integrated Sub

My take-----

I have heard those speakers at CES last January. Very nice speakers for the $.

I too heard the same "glassiness" that Wes heard. Matter of fact, I was actually impressed that he commented on it (I read the same review you did). Finally a reviewer who can HEAR huh? ;)

What that "glass" refers to is a "glare" in the mids, and a sort of glassy "hardness". It’s not too bad, but its there. Sort of sticks out at you on the piano solos I heard ("glassy" midrange and top end keys) or say a tenor sax where it was a bit more "forward" and "bite" then normal. Have you ever heard the term "digital glare"??? That's what the Mythos have, but more pronounced. I'm sure at that price point they are using some inexpensive tweeters/mids, so it’s not like they can achieve perfection!

As for the low end, and despite the measurements provided by the manufacturer, I would just say that 16Hz is optimistic for a normal room. Unless they are EQing those woofers, there is no way to defy the laws of physics and get 16Hz (flat anyway) out of those slim and low volume towers. Sure, they could be 10-15dB down at 16Hz, or something like that, but it cannot be flat to 16Hz without some serious EQ, and if there is a serious EQ then the Xmax of the drivers will run out of steam FAST and they will not play loud at all down deep without bottoming out.
There is no replacement for displacement!

Just my .02. I don't own them, so I cannot comment further (the ultimate set-up sentence here on AA!).

In general though, based on my experience---I lke the sound of an integrated sub/sat like the Mythos setup as opposed to the setup most commonly seen (like your Velodyne deal). Much more cohesive and integrated sound when the subs are "built in"!

Regards,
Joel
