one sub that seems to fly below the radar is the Pinnacle Subsonic. I have one and it does everything I need it to. Fast and articulate for its mainly musical duties.
I know Pinnacle as a brand doesn't seem to garner labels of "high end" audio but I bought mine because it was fast enough to integrate well with some Rega Ela transmission line speaks. Have moved on to single full range driver based blh's and it still disappears beautifully. Have also tried it with electrostats and no probs with it.
I can't remember what I paid but it was less than $400. And the guys at Pinnacle are awesome if you have any problems. One of the owners took care of me personally over a warranty issue, 2 1/2 yrs after purchase and a lost reciept.
Just one option.
