that rests against speaker front panel. It has holes for attaching screws. Cutting off segments of flange is not a big deal, especialy if it is plastic, like in Vifa tweeters. However, in more expensive tweeters it is aluminum, and I would think hard before sawing off a piece of a $160 tweeter.
Silk dome is indeed a way to go if you want clear and undistorted highs. But silk domes are not all equal. I can vouch for Scan Speak 9700 or Air Circ that I had experience with.
