Why not set one of your inputs on your Linn preamp to "Unity Gain" and then feed the main preamp outputs of a surround processor or receiver into the inputs that you set for unity gain.

That way, your two channel system is unencumbered by the surround setup, and you get to use your two channel system for the main channels of your surround system.

When it comes to using surround sound, just use the surround setup and make sure to change your Linn input to the one that you enabled unity gain on.

Unity gain just means that it fixes the gain for that input. On the Linn, it's like having the volume fixed at 80 if the volume range was 1-100. The surround setup controls the volume here.
