I think either the original Snell E or E/II would be great, certainly my top choice. The Snell J or J/II is also a viable option. The caveat is that they used foam surrounds on their woofers which would need replacement by now. I don't like the later Kevin Voecks designed versions quite as well.
Klipsch speakers are substantially more colored but fun for rock. The Cornwall I or II, the original Forte and the original Chorus are all worth having but your room might be a little small for these. You aren't too likely to find a nice pair of Altec Valencias in your price range and again your room doesn't offer these speakers an ideal amount of space but if you find a cheap pair, why not?
