Listening Report on the Focal 1027 BEE

My recent trip to New York City included a stop at Sound By Singer (E. 16th Street) where I got to hear the aforementioned. Initially, the sales guy hooked them up to a Pathos 80w/ch solid-state-tube hybrid; then he switched to an all class A solid-state 170w/ch amp (sorry, can't recall the name). A $7,000 cd player (again, the name escapes me) provided the signal source. Even my wife, hardly an audiophile, noticed how much more alive the 1027s sounded when driven by the class A amp. The listening room was relatively small - I'd say, something like 12x14x8. No question, it was smaller than the one Tweeter showed me during the Polk-Focal shootout I reported on this site last week. Thus, the soundstage created by the 1027s seemed smaller than the Focal 918s produced at Tweeter, a stark reminder of the huge roll room accoustics plays in what we hear. Remember, the 1027s cost ($8,000) twice as much as the 918s. Still, the 1027s impressed me (the sales guy, per my request, demoed the product with operatic music), though not to the point where I'm about to trash my a/d/s 1230s anytime soon.

Moreover: Almost every sales guy, after they ask me what I'm now listening to, tells me that 25 year old speakers (my 1230s date from 1983) can't possibly match up to what's offered today. It's so much sales hype, I know, but it's also not true. One day, if they let me, I'm going to haul those 1230s into some high-end audio emporium (like Singer) and see how they do against the Focals, et al.
