Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Two Ideas

1) Why not some Green Mountain Audio Europas? Very revealing and the bass gets nice and strong when up loud. Good soundstage, sense of space, etc. Just note that they are accurate enough to show off bad electronics.

2) You could build your own.
The SEAS 27tdfc is great for 1st order designs. It has a small impedance bump at its resonance and a low resonance at that.
The SEAS CA15RLY is a great little woofer that will also work great in a first order design. With a zobel you could go textbook here and get very close to what you want. If I remember correctly, the acoustic center of this driver is almost 3/4" back from the face. Use a .3 cubic foot box with a 1.5" diameter port about 4" long to start. Use heavy guage Solen coils or Goertz copper foil coils, Sonicaps, and Mills resistors and you will have something to be proud of.

Note: If you go the "build your own route" you should remember that most excellent first order designs aren't just a cap and a coil. GMA has a real funky way of treating the impedance of the tweeter so that you can hammer it without fatigue and so that it is more friendly to amplifiers. They call it a zobel for lack of a better term but it's something more innovative.
Also remember that GMA uses cast marble in their enclosures which is fantastic. You get little coloration and the box is so stiff that you get real strong bass up loud.

I included my email if you are curious about building your own and want to ask me more. I am lucky enough to have some great tools for this and could help out if I had those woofers in house.
