I have the 6.5 inch driver ($45 driver) from Danny at GR Research in 1.2 cubic foot ported box with no crossover....yup running full range....back of driver frame damped with constrained layer damping material and magnet damped with Deflex. Deflex and wool in box....sitting on top is modified $30 Vifa tweeter...this tweeter with back of cup cut off sounds the same as Esotar...yup for real...the xover is a cap (2.2uf Sonicap bypassed by Dynamicap .1uf cap)on the tweeter and a resistor on the tweeter (two small Caddocks bypassed by higher value Vishay 102C)....Tweeter is set back on the top of the box and felt around both tweeter and woof....ultra pure relatively inexpensive PCOCC solid core wire on both.....sounds overall slightly better than my all out modified Gallo Ref 3.1s.....very, very transparent.....very very cheap. The box is the main drawback....my box is 70lbs or more of two different thicknessess of highly refined particle board with visco elastic damping glue (Swedac) in between....I paid $500 for a woodworker to make them for me. Super dead...you hear only your knuckles when you rap on it.....but even a lesser cabinet with damping should get you most of the way there. These things disappear big time.....If you know what you are doing, you could build these in a day or less. I am going to post more details and pictures on my website soon.....these things are killer.....89db sensitivity and real easy load....30 watts gets me high 90s.
