Re: 1 inch MDF cabinet always an upgrade?

I have a pair of Sound Dynamics RTS-3s. Love'em. There're, I think, a lot of very good, very inexpensive small speakers around these days, but I do think the RTS-3s are (were?) sonic standouts in this crowd. Boy, they are cheaply made, though! Cheap, cheap, cheap even compared with other speakers in this class.

The only significant issue I have with this speaker is the enormous mid-bass boom (see link). The speculation here is that the flimsy cabinet is a contributor to this. I think, also, that some stuffing - more, or different placement - might help this. I'm sure they were designed with this mid-bass hump to address what Sound Dynamics saw as the requirements of the typical market they expected this speaker to be sold into.

A bit of cabinet bracing and/or a bit of stuffing adjustment to flatten this hump out a bit would make this cheap speaker even better (maybe one would want to spend a couple of bucks to upgrade the scant few xover parts, too). Bracing could, as is mentioned in this thread, also affect other areas of the speakers performance in a way that may be better or worse.
