General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: Can my Amp Drive this Speaker Efficiently (Rega & PMC) I need a little technical advice!!

Well, if you play the amp near its limits, it is probably clipping a substantial amount of the time. Very short amplifier clipping (milliseconds) is usually inaudible. You might notice that the bass doesn't get any louder, as you turn the volume up more--but that might be a limitation in the speaker. In either case, keep the levels below that. Or if the sound turns harsh and grainy, definitely turn down the volume. In an ordinary room, the Rega should be able to drive the speakers to quiet loud levels.

You can find a calculator at the following URL:

As for overheating, it's hard for you to measure actual temperature of the output transistors, but if the case gets really hot to the touch, then the amp is getting hot. This varies somewhat with different amps, as some run hotter than others.

Do you have any idea how loud you play music? The little Radio Shack SPL meter is not terribly expensive ($50) and is quite adequate for safety and HT calibration purposes. The analog version is preferable but they only seem to offer the somewhat more expensive digital version now.

I strongly suggest you keep safe listening levels in mind. The *industrial* standard (OHSA) for long term noise exposure is 90 dB, but many think this is too high and one should limit listening to 80 or 85 dB as much as possible. 80 dB sounds quite loud with most pop material, BTW. Richard Bass Nut Greene has some posts somewhere on this. Anyway, the OHSA regulations are linked below.
