Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

For a grand a DIY sub would beat any used sub.

If it's just for music or music/ht if you can build a wood box you can build a sub. If you need any more info on diy try the Missionpossible forum at HTguide. Many very knowledgeable speaker designer/builders there.

I've built two sealed subs for my system and can tell you the quality of bass is outstanding, about as good as it gets. Bass has always been important to me but near perfect bass is what I'd been shooting for.

Another thing to keep in mind with a good sub is some sort of equalization and bass traps if possible to reduce room modes, which we all have. This makes the bass more articulate and helps clarity in the midrange.

If you can't diy I suggest M&K. I find their subs quite musical and fast as well as articulate very low. Best wishes!
