I have not heard the Merlins - hope they are good. But I don't agree to one poster, if he is saying that the Quad 21Ls color the sound. I own these speakers for the past 2 years and I keep wondering why would anyone want to upgrade/switch their existing speaker. I am talking about the older version - not the newer L2.kkak66, I suggest that you go and audition the Quads (well broken-in ones) and then decide. If possible, do take your speakers along with you for the audition. It will really give you an idea - if you require a change or you are good with the current setup. Note that a good dealer will always have a very good setup for his/her listening room and your speakers may sound different if your existing room is not as good as the setup in these demo rooms.
Maybe it sounds like I am promoting the Quads - but I honestly feel that they are "sleepers". You need to give them good breathing space, and a long break-in period. If you have a good amp, source and good cables, then you will have years of enjoyment ahead of you rather than the upgrade/change bug.
Enjoy your music.
