Re: Jazz lovers - what speakers

I too listened to bebop, actually hardbop jazz if you want to get technical - late 50's - 60's ie. morgan, mobley, blue mitchell, horace silver etc and into soul jazz as well ie. willis jackson, gene ammons, houston person etc. I started out with the maggies 12, an excellent pair of speakers esp. with vocals but I felt that they weren't dynamic enough and now am using Gallo's Ref 3.1 with a rel strata III sub. A great speaker that will sound great at loud volumes but also sounds wonderful at late night listening where the maggies fall short in this dept. Recently went to all tubes with Audio research gear and they sound wonderful. Many people recommend the Vandy's 2ce but felt they were a little too "warm", ie. needed something a little more exciting. Haven't hear the vandy's quatro's but if you could afford them definitely give those a listened. If you're seriously into jazz, definitely invest in a good turntable ie. VPI, Kuzma etc as many recordings are not available on Cd. You will also be blown away with the sense of how natural sounding a vinyl can be - very addicting.
