Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

I own Nestorovics, but first allow me to introduce myself

I own Nestorovic speakers and may be able to provide you some guidance on the ones on Ebay (I have not yet seen the offering).

First, since I am rather new to the Speaker Asylum perhaps I should introduce myself. I have mainly hung around Hi-Rez Asylum, probably since around 2001. I began to lurk here (although I have occasionally posted here over the years) and at Vinyl Asylum a couple of months ago when I finally got serious about upgraded my vinyl system. And it’s been great. In response to one of my very first posts at Vinyl Asylum I “met” Dr. Steve Parry. Steve, who I have since met in person, has provided me *immense* assistance and mentoring in helping me up to speed to the world of analog. And last week I purchased an SME 10 turntable system that should be delivered and set up by Brian of the Analog Room in San Jose California in the next week or so. Thank you Steve!

Now about Nestorovic speakers, obviously, I am biased, so I’m very happy that three other people, including Steve Parry, who has heard my system, have posted favorable opinions of Nestorovic speakers.

Nestorovic speakers are relatively unknown largely because Mile (pronounced Meely) Nestorovic refused/failed to advertise and relied almost exclusively on word of mouth. Many high-end veterans that have been around a while know him and hold his work, both in tube amplifiers and, especially, his speakers in very high regard. Most of his speakers, according to Mr. Nestorovic, were sold in Europe and in Japan, although there is a small loyal following in the US.

And while not inexpensive new (from about $13,000-15,000 for the “entry” level 5AS to about $40,000 for the concrete lined flagship System 16A) they probably don’t have the greatest resale value (because nobody knows of them) and you should be able to get a great deal on them. Perhaps even a steal.

I realize that when it comes to Nestorovic speakers I am the most biased audiophile on the planet. OK I said it. And like most of us in this forum and elsewhere I have only heard a teeny tiny fraction of the speakers out there. So, obviously my opinion is highly contestable. And I don’t count the great mega speakers I have heard at CES, because it’s not fair to judge them (for better or for worse) in the ungodly environments in which they have to compete. But having said that, I can honestly say I have never heard a speaker system that I would trade for my Nestorovics. Including systems I have heard in high-end shops in the San Francisco Bay Area. (There are speakers I would love to try in my room such as the MBL E 101s or a large MAGICO model).

But I’ve been around the block enough to know that it’s the *room* more than *anything* that makes them perform so wonderfully in my system. In fact, I like them much better in my room than I do in Mr. Nestorovic’s room and he has a much higher level of associated gear than I do.

All Nestorovic speakers are truly full range, the 16A and 12A are rated from 18 Hz (and as a sealed system roll off slowly from there) and top off at 42 kHz with their leaf tweeters. (Mr. Nestorovic bristles if you “mistake” them for ribbons). The 5AS is rated from 25 Hz to 42 kHz. The bass is legendary, extremely deep and powerful. In my two channel/multi-channel system, I use a pair of 16As for the mains and three 5As for the center and rears. My system is an *audio only* system. My system is *not* HT.

Among many virtues the Nestorovics address what I have long believed to be the Achilles hill of the vast majority of "high-end" speakers. That is dynamic range (difference between most quiet passages to the loudest, most powerful passages) or the lack there of. The Nestorovics will replicate the dynamic range, at speed, of a well-recorded Mahler 6th Symphony seemingly without flinching. (I say “seemingly”, because I suspect there must be some compression and besides who doesn’t flinch at the hammer blows in Maher’s 6th?). No, they don’t have the dynamic range of an all horn design, but what other design does? And they will replicate equally well chamber music, jazz, and will rock and funk with the best.

There are some caveats with respect to replacement parts, especially since Mr. Nestorovic has taken ill. First and foremost are the foam surrounds used in most models. But there are people who can repair/replace them if need be. Any way, I may be able to guide you through.
