That's why I ask -- I've experienced the same thing, albeit not as dramatically as you have. In theory bass frequencies are omnidirectional but I suppose angles to room boundaries (especially corners) and the direct ratiation pattern of the bass / midbass driver(s) has a big influence. I suspect toe-in causes more overlap in the direct radiation pattern, thereby strengthening the output.
