Re: Amps for ESL-57s?

For what it's worth, here's my very short list of top sounding power amps for the original Quads:

SOLID STATE:
1. Levinson ML-2
2. Goldmund SRA
3. Bedini 25/25
4. Electrocompaniet 25/25
5. Sugden a21ap

TUBES
1. Berning ZH270 OTL (clamp boards practically a necessity)
2. Audio Research Classic 30, Classic 60, V70 (clamp boards strongly recommended for these last two models)
3. Music Reference RM-10

As an aside I haven't heard the Pass Labs Aleph 30/Aleph J (solid state), the Atma-Sphere S-30 MK III OTL (tube), and the Transcendent T-16 15 wpc OTL (tube).

Likely there are other A-List amps—solid state & tube—but this is what I prefer over the Quad II, Quad II-forty, Quad 303, Quad 306, Crown 20 & 30, Adcom 535, Mac MC60, MC240, MC225, Marantz 5 (pr.), 8, Nine (pr.), HK Citation V & II, and all Dynas, Fishers, Scotts, Eicos & Heaths I've heard or owned. The one Futterman OTL amp I auditioned showed great promise but needed a thorough going over. All very subjective, of course...
