Any box speaker manufactured to a comparable level of quality would sound like crap...Yes it's amazing that they sound as good as they do. The beauty of modding them is that it's easy to get good results. The ground work has already been done by others.
There are experimenters out there who have made or are making REAL WOOD frames for their Maggies. The results are impressive.
