They last a long time if not overdriven and properly cared for (twenty years + is certainly attainable). The issue with buying older models used vs. new models for the same money is more difficult to answer. Newer designs tend to provide a lot of speaker for the money, partly based, I think, on more efficient manufacturing processes. OTH speakers from high-end makers that have been recently replaced and bought used offer great value also. I guess it all depends on whether you are totally averse to risk and whether you fall in love with the used speakers in question.
