Re: Tonian Acoustics

The Phy-based speaker called TL-M1 is $17K. He is the US distributor for Phy, and offers a Phy-based DIY basic cab design for obviously much less. I have not heard the DIY design. His TL-M1 is quite simply the best speaker I've yet to hear. His more affordable speakers use Fostex drivers. Most would probably agree that Phy drivers are among the best available. They are not inexpensive. So one route would be to build a cab around these drivers. But so much of the overall sound of a speaker is a result of the design of the cab. Tonian cabs are very complex. I'm not familiar with some of the cab designs out there for Phy drivers but it may be worth trying to listen to some. To answer your question, let me start by saying the fostex based designs have the same sonic signature as his Phy speaker. All Tonian speakers are incredibly dynamic, offer superb extension in HF, are resolving of low level details and have great tone. The bass is articulate and present, if not visceral. But there is excellent tonal balance. What do the more expensive Phy's offer over the fostex? Greater tonal purity, and utterly free of any grain. I've heard both speakers extensively. Happy to reply to any specific q's. Feel free to contact me.
