Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

A long time - 8 years old is NOT old in speakerland.

Buying speakers is not like buying a car or a refrigerator. IMO you're never be better off buying lesser quality new speakers over superior used speakers, provided the used pair is in good condiiton. I've always bought used or demo and never had a minute's regret.

I think the question isn't whether this pair has declined in performance (extremely unlikely unless they've been damaged) but whether you like the sound of these fine speakers as opposed to what else you could buy for 3k. And 8 years old isn't very old - lordy, some of us still have 15-20- even 40 year old speaks! These ProAcs are probably good for many many more years if they're taken care of.

These Responses will blow away anything new at a comparable price. (You might ask a ProAc dealer if there are any upgrades for the 3.5s, if that makes you feel better.) You could still be upgrading electronics and front end 5 years from now with the 3.5s, as they will only sound better and better with high quality gear in the chain. And therein lies perhaps your only dilemma: the 3.5s will sound their best with quality equipment - mid-fi stuff won't let them truly sing.

Unlike digital, where today's $2000-3000 CD players sound far better than the $15,000 separates of 15 years ago, many older speakers more than hold their own with - or occassionally surpass - current models. Although the 3.5s might not reflect their designer's very latest ideas, they are still very high quality, musical speakers. $3000 is a minimal investment in quality sound. Should you ever want to go in another direction, you could easily resell the 3.5s. for about the same money.

So I say NO, don't buy lesser, new speakers. This sounds like a very good deal.

If you can't hear the difference bewteen these ProAcs and the PSB Platinums of this world...well, that's another question.
