When Vince set out to design an ‘all purpose’ tower that would err more to the side of giving you a more cosmopolitan hi-fi sound, the Forest is what he came up with. The intention of the Forest is simple; to act as the go-to tower in the Totem line for the listener that likes a very balanced and accurate sound that will be as good as the recording / upstream components will allow. The Forest shows zero bias towards any particular genre of music and will manage to communicate it to you in both an engaging, insightful manner while also remaining a sense that is true to the source that’s being fed through them. The Forest can play in a variety of rooms both big and small, and can also work very well on medium powered electronics, be it valve based or solid state.The Hawk, by contrast, was designed to dig deep into the soul of the performance erring more to the side of speed, tone, and immediacy. When done right, the Hawk may very well be one of the best Totem’s ever made. Like the Forest, the Hawk can handle any type of music with aplomb. While the Hawk is not as neutral as the Forest, it has a certain ‘boogie’ factor that I feel the Forest lacks. The Hawk also digs down incredibly deep and can actually pressurize the a room as large as 30x30x15 on the right electronics (Lamm, upper tier McIntosh). Believe it or not, the Hawk will have more heft than the Forest. Contrary to common belief, the Hawk actually requires a lot of space to strut its stuff. This means placing them in rooms large rooms. It takes space for the imaging to become truly holographic and for the tweeter and the woofer to fill in. From the looks of it, you may just be able to skim by and get away with the Hawk in your room. However, whether or not it delivers the goods depends on the electronics you own or plan on owning. The Forest by direct contrast, is much easier to work with.
