Re: Harbeth Monitor 30 vs Spendor SP2/3E vs Spendor S8E vs Spendor SP1/2E

I've never compared any of the models listed but, being an S8e owner, I think they might work for you. Of course I'm biased so take all of this with a grain of salt. You certainly at least need to consider them for a home demo. They never sound boxy (first speaker I've owned who's cabinets do not vibrate with music) and they are very smooth. They use a SEAS tweeter custom made to their specifications. I don't know if it's in the excel line or not but I can say that they have the best combination of smoothness, resolution, clarity, body and transient speed of any speaker I've owned thus far (and I've had some pretty good ones). IMO quality of a tweeter and/or midbass is only one part of the equation in making a good speaker. You can very easily create a mediocre speaker using top-spec. drivers and visa-versa. The quality of drivers are very, very good these days. Plus, they have good deep bass but its fast, tuneful, "good" bass, not porty humpy bass like so many ported speakers these days. The same dealer I bought these from also carries Harbeth and I chose these over the Compact 7 since IMO they're a more "well-rounded" speaker for all genre's from rock to classical. If the M30 was closer in price I would have considered them long and hard ... BUT, like you said, they're way expensive.
