Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

What? I own the T-1 and the T-5's and they..

both have a great midrange. I believe you are mistaken in what you wrote. As in all things you are entitled to your opinion. Unless you have heard T-8 speakers your comment Vs. the reviews speak far differently. Even Stereophile mentioned the T-8's in passing in their review of the T-5's that I now use for my front main HT speakers. They had positive things about the T-8's they heard first hand if people had the $10K for them in 1999 at the CES show when they auditioned them first hand. I have Hales T-1 for my L&R side speakers, T-5's for front and the Concept 2's (for now) for my rear speakers. Hales speakers are very power hungry. Even though I still use tube amps and preamps for my 2 channel stereo the Hales in my 7.1 HT really needed the power from my 8 channel Audio Design Associates PTM-8150. It can deliver 250 wpc at 4 ohms. Someday it would be nice to power my HT with all tube amps. For now I will have to settle with my Fosgate HT vacuum tube Prologic ll processor/preamplifier to soften up the ADA PTM-8150 just a bit better to my liking.

This is part of the Stereophile review on the T-5: Just copy and paste the link to read it into your browser. The review at Stereophile in full can be read at:

"In designing the Transcendence Five, Hales most assuredly got the midrange right: it has a smooth, relaxed, tonally neutral quality that is crisp when that's called for, and highly resolving of musically relevant detail. That magnesium-cone midrange driver is a winner! I could hear no metallic colorations, nor any peakiness at the top of the driver's passband—a reported characteristic of this type of driver that the crossover obviously has well under control. And, in case you were wondering, good string sections of orchestras sounded very good indeed, with much the same silkiness these instruments have in real life. Voices, male and female, had a very natural quality, with plenty of presence but without sibilant emphasis. The integration with the tweeter sounded seamless, with tremendous coherence from the midrange up to beyond audibility. Coloration due to cabinet resonances seemed to be at a very low level."

Again I hate to read anyone making a blanket statement that is so subjective dissing the Hales T-8 speakers. Considering Hales speakers are a real bargain in the used audio marketplace today they make affordable very good sounding HT speakers to my ears. John
