Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

You can avoid a receiver only if you get...

powered speakers.

But SO much depends on how much you're willing to spend. You can get a decent pair of powered speakers for, say, $350 that are often used in multi-media applications, like video editing systems. Mackie, KRK, and others are good choices here. You might need RCA to XLR connectors to make them work but they can be found or made. Some probably can work with RCA-only connections.

But generally speaking the people here are more oriented toward higher end systems. I'd say the big majority focus on music-only systems but there's a solid body of people here who pay some attention to home theater. But most people are pretty ambitious in what they're trying to accomplish. It sounds to me you're just looking for a decent pair of speakers. If you're not looking for especially refined sound and you want surround sound that's another matter. I've no particular interest in surround sound at home.
