Unfortunately, quite a few things could cause this, but based on what you described before, something mechanical has happened that causes one or more drivers to draw more current. Since you're not really hearing distortion, and it's a 2 and 1/2 way design, and it's not as loud, I would guess that one of the woofers has had its frame warp or bend to the point that it is completely stuck. If it was voice coil rub severe enough to draw that much extra current, you would most certainly hear it.

The test to see if my guess is correct should be easy enough, just press lightly on one woofer then the other to check their movement. If they both move easily, I'm wrong. If one won't move at all, or moves in but stays in place, you have found your problem.
