Re: Near-field listening with a sub

See my post in the link below—it concerns use of a REL Storm III in both my audio and in my HT system.

I think one of the reasons why you think things sound 'fast and lively' is not "because the bass wave arrives before the mids and highs on a transient stike" but because they arrive almost simultaneously. The circuits in the REL introduce a delay in the signal, something that's apparently common in many active subs, so the sound from the REL actually arrives later than one would expect given it's physical position. Positioning the REL closer than the mains is actually compensating for that. You may have over-compensated a little but things will sound a lot better with the sub 4' away and the mains 9' away than they would if the sub were 14' away and the mains 9'. In your case, the built in delay in the REL reduces the impact of that 5' difference in positioning whereas in the second case it would exacerbate it.

As I say elsewhere in the thread in the link, I keep thinking I should retry the REL in my music system with a placement similar to what you have done, or at least a lot closer to that than my previous experience which had it further away than the main speakers. I think I would get considerably better results than when I had the REL in that system previously. Given my experience with the REL in the HT system which compensates for differences in listening distance for the various speakers, I'm not at all surprised by your experience.
