In response to John Chleapas- John- I agreed with you re digital until a week ago last Monday. That's when 2 AIX DVD-As I ordered plus two great, long samplers thrown in for free arrived. I have always thought ALL CDs sounded like utter crap. And I had bought ~12 DVD-As over the past 18 mos too and I thought THEY all did too. Then around November, 2006 I bought Beatles "Love" DVD-A and it sounded much better than all the others. Like them, it relied on tapes from decades past, but somehow the disk had been engineered to be far less aggressive and irritating. Dr. Waldrep tells me it's the use of old analog tapes and all the reverb and other processing in them that accounts for a lot of the irritation most DVD-As have generated in listeners up to now. So then on March 12, 2007, a date which will live in glory in my life, I opened the package of AIX Records DVD-As and played one. WOW! Suddenly I have the sound system I have always dreamed of. I have warm, rich, full, musical audio in my great room. It is the best thing since the LP. I lately had played a few of my LPs and they sound so good that I realized one forgets how good they were. Billions were sold over 20+ years and people loved them. They were a huge success. It was a stunning technology, and it still is. I love them. I know that with tube technology (I don't have) and a good cartridge (I do have- Grado G-1+) they are a joy to behold. And there are legions of people who feel the way I do about CDs. But ONE person, taking advantage of the storage capacity of the DVD, has figured out how to do digital right. ONE!
I called AIX Records before 9 AM last Thursday and Mark Waldrep answered the phone. I was stunned, and we talked for nearly an hour. I'm a Stanford grad, and don't ever judge Stanford by me, but I have an average intellect. Dr. Waldrep can talk fast and he was losing me in the technical discussion a little. I'm an accountant, not an audio engineer, so little wonder there. But I can tell you that he has an impressive intellect! He says he has spent ~$1 million producing the AIX DVD-As and has gotten maybe half of that back. It's a low volume, almost custom product he is producing. He is involved in many other projects there in LA re audio and video. Re hi-rez audio and the accompanying video, he is "migrating to servers" he says, meaning he is starting his Itrax site this summer. You will be able to download his hi-rez product and store it on a server in your home. Google Niveus Media or Inteset to see these servers. He told me he will continue to produce the physical disks.
Acura has DVD-A in its vehicles and, after listening to 250 tracks of DVD-A from many producers, they chose 7, all his, to go on a demo disc they are using to demo the Acuras. I am retired from the Executive Office of GMAC in New York and I am trying to get GM to have him produce one for them. DVD-A is now available in the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia, several Cadillacs, and will be avaiable in the new Buick Enclave.
I am trying to spread the very important news to audiophiles that something very, very different and great is available to them. You should try an AIX DVD before you get too negative about what I'm trying to tell you. Just try one! You won't believe it. Suddenly digital audio is warm and wonderful. Combined with the great video on the vid side, it is really a great experience. Dr. Waldrep told me even a small promotional campaign costs $30,000 and he can't afford it. This guy loves great audio fidelity and loves music. His Ph.D is in Music from UCLA. He told me he is also a professor of music now. So we have a person here who is not making millions from this, yet, but I hope he soon is. He has made the better mouse-trap, and I'm spreading the word! I love great audio and he is producing it. I implore you all to just try his "Nitty Gritty Surround" or "Brand New Opry" disks or any other AIX disk. I think you will agree that this is something very, very different from what you have experienced before in digital audio. I am going to continue to procelitize about AIX, and I will get AIX the publicity it deserves. There is nothing in this for me except saving what now turns out to be a fantastic format, when it is done right, but that is a lot. Try and AIX DVD-A and enjoy the music. I have my list of the next five AIX I'm going to order.
