I had a CD with a 30 Hz tone included with a woofer refoaming kit. I played it with a conventional CD player and receiver I had lying around - of course, being sure that the lower end of its power bandwidth was a respectable 20 Hz, instead of cheezy 40 Hz. I just soldered alligator clips to speaker wire, connected them to the woofer, turned up the volume, and watched the cone vibrate - the recommendation was 1/8" to 1/4" cone travel, which I very roughly approximated.(It was slightly gratifying to use a stereo component as a useful instrument, rather than for the usual hedonistic pleasure.....so I got pleasure out of using components for non-pleasurable use (??). Gotta tell that to Dr. Kroger......)
The idea seems twofold. First, the tone reveals any voice coil scraping due to an incorrectly aligned surround. Second, playing the test tone has some centering action of its own.
It seemed to work, as the woofers appear to be free from voice coil rubbing, etc.
As an answer to a posting I made to a forum once, people informed me that you can get test tones online, and not even spend money for a CD. The links are....somewhere....others in this forum no doubt have them handier.
