The microphone input volume controls on the mixer should work as a limiter, but someone needs to monitor and adjust the inputs levels when switching to that input to prevent overload. The noise in your pressbox environment probably masked the distortion which led to your speaker failure; if you're using the speakers as pressbox monitors during broadcast and in high background noise environment, you really need to upgrade those speakers to rugged, studio monitor type.
