Go with option 1.
You can set the sub's LP filter set at 10Hz or 1 octave above the lowest -3dB (e.g 40Hz) frequency of the main speakers.
Depending on the subs roll off rate which typically should be 24dB/octave, set the sub to begin roll off at 50Hz or 80Hz or anywhere in between if the sub's roll off rate differs.
