Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Yep, Vandy 2ce Sig II

I agree. I've had mine for about three weeks. They're probably almost broken-in and I'm thinking to do a review after I figure out what to do to get them properly bi-wired.

But I will say this: they are seriously freaking good speakers. Over the last 3-4 years I've mulled over what to get next, with a potential budget of $5K. I almost pulled the trigger on Thiel 2.4s last year but dentist bills dashed that plan. The Gallos are intriguing but I like to buy US made products. I'm unaware of any sub $5K speaker that can beat the Vandy 3A Sig, but my wife doesn't want those monoliths in our living room - and neither do I. The 2 Sig IIs are a nice compromise: smaller than the 3s but with most of the sonic performance. And for $2K, they get my vote for "most-unbelievable-value-in-high-end-audio".

I think Art Dudley's review comes very close to stating my impressions. To paraphrase, some speakers in its price range may do some things better, but none is as good overall. I'll go further and compare the Sig IIs to more expensive speakers I've heard: The Thiel 7.2 has more extended and better defined bass, the Wilson W/P 7 has more mid-bass warmth (though this may be a coloration), and the Avalon Eclipse has greater transparency and midrange clarity. But the 2ce Sig II holds its own in these categories. The treble is, perhaps, a bit subdued relative to other speakers I've heard. I 'spose that's what people mean when they say that Vandies are "laid-back". This doesn't bother me, though. I think the treble sounds fine. More than anything, these Vandies are very musical. In that regard, they are as good as anything I've heard at any price. And did I mention that they only cost $2K? If you can tolerate these mini-monoliths in your living room, they've gotta be on your short list. *Highly* recommended - if this is the last speaker I ever own, I won't cry.
