The best speakers I've heard for difficult placement, particularly near a back wall is the Gradient Revolution. It is a small floorstanding speaker with a bass module on the bottom that can be configured differently, depending on the proximity of the back and side walls. I have heard it in two different rooms, both small, and it sounded pretty good, given the circumstances (CES show).I also think the Audionote line has some promising models. Audionote says they are intended for corner placement, but they sound pretty good away from the corner as well.
