Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Maybe a function of conventional drivers & compression

I think the compression ideas are probably pretty close. Although I haven't noticed the brighter-as-louder issue on some of the latest great speakers (e.g. Quatros), my old Spicas certainly exhibit it, as do just about all non mega-buck speakers I've heard. And I do think most of it is speaker-related.

One big exception are horns - had old Klipsch LaScalas once (actually got them to sound pretty good with the right tube amps) and was always amazed that, as they got louder, the tonal balance seemed to stay exactly the same - the sound just got louder. Given how much less work horn-loaded woofers need to do, the compression argument makes some sense to me.
